Biography[ | ]
Supreme Commander of the Third Ostian Expeditionary Fleet, captain of the Ostian ironclad Indomitable, and noted firearms expert Admiral Janek Zai leads the hunt for Koshai through the Maelstrom and into the Ram formation.
Zai is the firstborn son of the famed Ostian gunsmith Valor Zai, who perfected ways to incorporate aetheric power into otherwise ordinary firearms, and Admiral Zina Miral, who insisted her son follow tradition and join the military. But the young man never lost his knack for firearms and mastered their use and design as well. Zai picked up his first pistol before he could speak in complete sentences, and was a champion sharpshooter by the time he entered the Ostian Navy. Once there, he proved just as capable at commanding airships in battle against bandits and Behemoths. He rose quickly through the ranks and achieved the rank of admiral after he stopped a multi-Behemoth assault on Ostigrad. Today he combines both of these skills, teaching his crew and interested Slayers how to use Ostian Repeaters in combat.
Recently, he has become obsessed with destroying a massive new Behemoth that has savaged many islands in the Ostian nation. When his vessel runs aground in Ramsgate after an encounter with a furious storm, he turns his efforts to coordinating the hunt for the Sovereign of Thorns from Ramsgate and training Slayers in the effective use of Ostian Repeaters - a type of weapon design to counter Koshai's strengths and bring it down.
